Christmas projects around patchwork and quilting

In this article, I will introduce you to my favorite projects of 2024.

Do you know that too? The golden autumn is over, the November blues have set in, and if you blink twice now, it's time to wrap Christmas presents.

"When it gets dark early in the evening, it's also the best time to sit down at the sewing machine and work magic."

"Here I have compiled a few projects for you and supplemented them with time, material requirements, and fabric suggestions so that you can get started right away."

Less searching, more time for implementation.

My BusyMom secret tip: If you find that time is too tight before the holiday, most patchwork projects can easily be turned into "winter projects."

"You already have an idea and are just looking for the right fabric? Here you go directly to the Winter and Christmas collection."

Christmas and Winter Sewing Projects

1. Christmas Tree Skirt Nutcracker - The Weekend Quilter

Did you know that nutcrackers, with their grim facial expressions, are primarily meant to drive away evil spirits?

With the quilted Christmas tree skirt Merry March, you bring home eight of these lucky charms and protectors. Your floor might also appreciate the protection from resin, needles, and (Beware!) watering.

"Here you can find the material package for the original design."

The pattern includes two different nutcracker designs that you can repeat or modify according to your taste. Why shouldn't everyone be a one-of-a-kind?

Do you want to sew the blanket the same way? Here you go.

This project is worked with Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP). This way, the details of the figures are perfectly highlighted.

What you should bring:
Prior knowledge of machine sewing and Foundation Paper Piecing is required. You can find support, for example, in Angela Walters' Paper Piecing tutorial on YouTube.

2. Dog Bed - Wellspring Designs

"Even if your four-legged friend likes to take over your bed or your sofa at night, sew him his very own."

"Of course, it works in theory for cats as well, but my cat Cleo only sleeps on chairs or unfinished quilt projects."

The dog bed is available in three sizes.
Klein: 35 x 45 cm – Ideal for small cuddle monsters. -

Medium: 55 x 95 cm – Perfect for medium-sized furry friends.

Large: 75 x 95 cm – Just right for the big furry alarm systems.

"You can customize the dog bed completely and use your favorite fabrics or the most beautiful of your scraps, so that it becomes not only practical but also a real eye-catcher. If you have basic skills, you can even add a zipper. Then your masterpiece can even be washed."

Your dog will be forever grateful to you for this cozy retreat – and you might just get your sofa back. 🐾

2. Patchwork Pot Holder "Noel" - Suzy Quilts

"Admittedly, oven mitts sound about as sexy as knitted socks."

"But just as you sent Grandma a loving thank you for your warm feet during the last winter forest walk, someone will think of you who is taking a fragrant apple pie out of the oven with YOUR quilted pot holders."

"You're not convinced yet? The material requirements for this small quilt project are manageable."

"Apart from thermal insulating fleece, you probably have everything at home. Just imagine how your leftover box is looking forward to your visit."

"Additionally, you can quilt here quite boldly. Any free-motion beginners around?"

Suzy uses the templates from her festive Noel pattern for the pot holders. Of course, you can also use your own design and just follow the instructions for the pot holders.

Even "old" test blocks can be honored here and turn it into a real lightning project.

2. Festive Pillow Covers - Pen and Paper Patterns

"Christmas cushion covers are the secret superstars in our home decor box. In no time, the sofa has a new look and the whole living room sings of the holidays."

In a household with small children, this decor solution also has unbeatable advantages: Cozy, indestructible, and suitable for pillow fights.

'Take this, the candle holder on the table!'

"In addition, they are more versatile and much quicker to finish than a whole Christmas quilt."

"I find this one particularly funny, even if it certainly doesn't match every decor style."
